Chapter 21 - Your Mental Attitude
Many of us carry with us the very thing which makes for our defeat. We carry it without knowing it. What is it? It is a negative attitude. If you think you will not win; if you doubt your ability to succeed, you have odds against you. If you think failure, you are doomed to failure. If you think you are sick, you will get sick. If you fear some malady, it will have a tendency to afflict you. That is not exactly a correct statement but it conveys my meaning to the general public. Your mental attitude is reflected in your general conduct, in your efforts, in your speech, in your very eyes. As a simple illustration everyone can understand—a dog knows when a man is afraid of it and will charge it for a bite; whereas, if the man is unafraid, it will stand clear of him. Animals recognize fear if it is present in a human being. Men also recognize it. They also recognize other feelings of weakness. Such feelings defeat you. Shake them off. Assume a positive, aggressive attitude. Know yourself and master your line of work. Recognize the fact that you do know your job. Realize that you are as good as anyone. Shake off that inferiority complex. Hold up your head. Look your friends and foes in the eye. Be sincere. Believe in yourself and you will get where you wish to go. Remember this. It is as true as the fact that you exist. Your thoughts have made you what you are and they can make you just what you wish to become.
Never forget that the difference in the great man in the White House and you are the ideas in your head. Now just who is responsible for the ideas being in your head? You more or less are. If they are holding you back use the knowledge you have acquired by reading this book to alter them. If you need the help of a hypnotist seek him out and get help. You do not need much help if you just help yourself. I do not mean to infer that you can get into the White House but I do mean that you can better your circumstances and improve your mental and physical condition.
Now you may be asking what does all this have to do with hypnotism? Just this: I have given you the rules for inducing hypnosis and certain rules of the mind. In this chapter I have given you the common sense, everyday method of applying these rules to your own mind. Such methods seem simple, do they not? It is just that simple. Just try it. The greatest thing about it, is the fact that it really works.
